Tomtar

Legends of Nordic folklore abound with tales of supernatural beings.  The best known of these supernatural beings are the tomtar (trolls).  Tomtar are large, ugly, unpleasant beings that sometimes reside under bridges for the purpose of causing havoc.

The smaller and more benign supernatural beings in Nordic folklore are the tomtes or nisser.  When members of a Nordic household notice something is missing or misplaced, they understand that their household tomte is simply trying to get attention.  Because a tomte is bound to his family, tomtes accompanied families emigrating to America.   At Nordic Folklore, we recommend every Scandinavian family proudly display a picture that acknowledges their household tomte.
